Description

La Vélodyssée is a cycling itinerary linking Nantes to La Rochelle, crossing varied landscapes between the Atlantic Ocean and the countryside. The route allows you to discover the region’s natural and cultural treasures, such as the Poitevin marshes, wild beaches and pine forests. This route is ideal for enthusiasts looking for an adventure in the heart of Brittany and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.

Characteristics of this journey/holiday

Day by day

Day 1 Nantes

Arrive in Nantes, birthplace of French writer Jules Verne and famous for its unique Verne-inspired Machines de l’île. It features a giant mechanical elephant that takes visitors on rides through the city. The town is also famous for its medieval Château des Ducs de Bretagne and its Muscadet wine.

Day 2 Nantes – St Brévin les Pins 60 km

Leaving the city, you follow the Loire, admiring its impressive river scenery. Crossing the Breton hinterland, you join the coastal cycle path, passing several ports and locks with their famous fishing boats. Arrive at Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, famous for its beaches, dunes and the Serpent d’océan, an emblematic work of art.

Day 3 St Brévin – Pornic 20 km

Leaving Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, you’ll follow the coast towards Pornic, passing through landscapes of dunes and pine forests. In Pornic, take a break to admire its charming harbor and its castle overlooking the ocean. You’ll then follow the Vélodyssée along the coast, between wild creeks and salt marshes, before reaching Bouin, in the heart of the Breton marshes, where oyster farming and vast stretches of wilderness provide a unique backdrop.

Day 4 Pornic – Fromentine – Notre Dame de Monts 55 km

Departing from Pornic, you cross the Breton marshes to Fromentine. Take a break to admire the Pointe de la Fosse lighthouse before continuing on to the seaside resort of Notre Dame-de-Monts, renowned for its beaches and unspoilt nature.

Day 5 Notre Dame de Monts – Sables d’Olonne 58 km

Leaving Notre Dame, you’ll follow the Vendée coastline, with its protected natural sites and typical villages such as Saint-Jean-de Monts. Approaching Les Sables d’Olonne, you’ll discover the lively port and beaches of the famous seaside resort. It’s a pleasant stopover, ideal for enjoying the sea and the tranquility of the Vendée.

Day 6 Sables d’Olonne – La Tranche sur Mer 40 km

You’ll follow the Vendée coastline, offering breathtaking ocean views. You’ll cross beautiful beaches, such as those at Talmont Saint-Hilaire, and observe wild, unspoilt landscapes. At La Tranche-sur-Mer, you’ll enjoy a friendly seaside resort with beaches renowned for swimming and water sports. This stopover combines nature, relaxation and a seaside atmosphere

Day 7 La Tranche sur Mer – La Rochelle 67 km

Departing from La Tranche-sur-Mer, you’ll follow the coast through the marshes and forests of southern Vendée. After a pause at Esnandes to admire the Baie de l’Aiguillon, you enter the Charente-Maritime region and reach La Rochelle, with its old port, emblematic towers and unique maritime atmosphere.

Day 8 Departure
