Day 1 Nice
Individual arrival in Nice by early afternoon. Followed by a tour of the city with a visit to the Museum of Modern Art, which features Yves Klein, Ben and Arman, the city’s avant-garde artists. Dinner in the picturesque city on the Côte d’Azur.
Day 2 Nice – Saint Paul de Vence – Rosary chapel – Nice 33 km
Continuation of the city tour through the old town with the beautiful flower market on the Cours Saleya. Then it’s off on the bikes to the artists’ village of Saint Paul de Vence, a small medieval town with well-preserved fortifications, picturesquely perched on a rocky ridge above two valleys. Chagall is buried in the cemetery of St-Paul-de-Vence, and just a stone’s throw away is the Fondation Maeght, a mecca for modern art par excellence: Chagall, Ubac, Miró and Giacometti all contributed to the construction of the Catalan Sert, within whose walls classical modernism is exhibited. The journey continues to the “Chapel du Rosaire” by Henry Matisse. The architecture, the ceramics, the windows, the sculptures, the furniture and of course the colors and paintings were his work of 3 years. Transfer back to Nice.
Day 3 Nice – Mougins – Vallauris – Antibes – Biot – Nice 42 km
Transfer to the small town of Vallauris. Picasso lived here between 1948 and 1955 and concentrated mainly on ceramics and sculpture. He left the pottery village the monumental fresco “War and Peace”, created in 1952-54, as well as the bronze sculpture “Man with the Sheep” on the village square. Following in Picasso’s footsteps, we cycle to Antibes, one of the oldest towns on the Côte d’Azur. It was founded by the Greeks as early as 340 BC. After a guided tour, visit the Musée Picasso. In addition to paintings by the painter, you can also admire works by Max Ernst, Miró and other 20th century artists. From Antibes, it is not far to the picturesque village of Biot. We conclude today’s art program with a visit to Fernand Léger’s museum and enjoy a relaxing cycle back to Nice along the cycle path by the sea.
Day 4 Nice – Villa Ephrussi – Villa Kérylos – Nice 31 km
Transfer to Villa Ephrussi in St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. From 1907 to 1912, the banker’s wife Béatrice de Rothschild built this impressive villa in the Italian Renaissance style. Visit the rooms furnished with exquisite 18th century furniture. Around the villa, several styles of garden design have been combined on the extensive terraced grounds. The beautiful building housing the Matisse Museum in Nice is dedicated to this famous painter and exhibits works from all of his creative periods. The only thing left to do is to head back to the center of Nice and another wonderful day comes to an end with a delicious dinner.
Day 5 Nice
In the morning there is still time to visit the Marc Chagall Museum, which presents one of his largest public collections. Departure in the afternoon or individual extension.
