Characteristics of this journey/holiday

Day by day

Day 1 Constance

You start your round trip in Constance, the largest city on the lake of the same name. The Council of Constance was held here 600 years ago, the only council north of the Alps to elect a pope. The Rhine leaves Lake Constance behind here and marks kilometer 0 on its way to the North Sea. Just a few minutes’ walk from the medieval center is the Swiss town of Kreuzlingen with its lively harbor. Use the time to visit the island of Mainau, stroll through the old town of Constance or visit the aquariums in the Sea Life Center and the Archaeological Museum.

Day 2 Constance – Ludwigshafen / Überlingen 35 – 55 km

First, you follow the Gnadensee to the former imperial town of Radolfzell, now a health resort. From here, you cross the Bodanrück range of hills and encounter a very short slope. When you reach the Überlinger See, part of Lake Constance, you’ll be rewarded for your efforts with magnificent views of the lake. In the evening, take a stroll along Überlingen’s pretty promenade.

Day 3 Ludwigshafen – Kressbronn / Nonnenhorn 45 – 60 km

Today’s journey takes you along the Obersee. Your first stop is the Birnau pilgrimage church. Set amidst vineyards, the square in front of the splendidly decorated Baroque church offers a magnificent view of the lake. Visit the Unteruhldingen stilt museum, Germany’s oldest inhabited castle in Meersburg, and be impressed by the largest collection of aviation history in Friedrichshafen. Lindau’s old town is located on an island. Enjoy views of the Alps from the harbor – in the foreground, the town’s landmarks: the Lion of Bavaria and the 33-meter-high lighthouse.

Day 4 Kressbronn – Höchst/ Rorschach 30 – 55 km

Not far from Lindau, you’ll pass the border with Austria almost unnoticed. Take a break in Bregenz and take the cable car up to the Pfänder, the festival town’s local mountain – with fantastic views of Lake Constance and over 200 Alpine peaks. Just a stone’s throw from Bregenz, you’ll cross the Bregenzer Ach à Hard river and the Alpenrhein river. Welcome to Switzerland!

Day 5 Höchst – Constance 40/ 50 km

Today’s journey takes you through Romanshorn, home to Switzerland’s largest port on Lake Constance. The tour continues along Lake Constance to Konstanz. End the day with a stroll through the old town or an ice cream at the harbor.

Day 6 Constance – Schaffhausen 50 km

Cycling along Lake Constance, you reach Stein am Rhein, with its medieval houses adorned with frescoes. Switching several times between Germany and Switzerland, you reach the canton’s capital, Schaffhausen. The town, whose inhabitants competed to build gables on their houses, is overlooked by the Munot fort.

Day 7 Schaffhouse – Rhine Falls – Constance 45 km + boat

After breakfast, cycle the short distance to the Rhine Falls, one of Europe’s largest waterfalls. Up the Rhine, you’ll return to Stein am Rhein and then follow the Höri half-peninsula. In Gaienhofen, you board the ferry to the island of Reichenau. From there, it’s just a few kilometers back to Constance.
