Description

Cycling along the Canal de Bourgogne is a real pleasure: On the towpath and on small side roads you enjoy the calm and the breathtaking nature which sorrounds you. The region has a rich cultural heritage of castles, abbeys and villages. The French cuisine and the various landscape are charming the cyclists.

Day by day

Day 1 Arrival Joigny 

Arrival in Joigny. Enjoy the French charme of this lovely little town and discover the historic center, which is located next to the Yonne river.

Day 2 Joigny – Tonnerre  55 km 

After breakfast you are starting your cycling trip. The landscape is very various. You are cycling through wine growing country and willows. In Tonnerre you shouldn’t miss to visit the Hôtel-Dieu, from the 13th century as well as the Fosse Dionne.

Day 3 Tonnerre – Montbard 60 km

On today’s ride you are cycling along the romantic Canal de Bourgogne. On your way you have the possibility to visit two outstanding renaissance castles. First the Château d’Ancy le Franc, which was constructed in the 17. Century by Serlio. Then you can discover the Château Tanlay. Arrival in Montbard. This beautiful town is located directly on the Canal de Bourgogne.

Day 4 Montbard – Pouilly-en-Auxois 54 km

You continue your leisure cycling along the Canal de Bourgogne through green nature. When you make a small detour, you can visit the beautiful Abbaye de Fontenay, a former Cistercians Abbey, which is listed as UNESCO world heritage. Afterwards you have the possibilty to stop at Alésia. The assumed location where the Romans fought against Vercingétorix. Then you continue cycling along the canal untill you reach the small Burgundian town of Pouilly-en- Auxois.

Day 5 Pouilly-en-Auxois – Dijon  60 km

You leave Pouilly and cycle to Dijon. The capital of Burgundy welcomes you with its charm. In the lively city center you shouldn’t miss a visit at the ducs palace and the museum of fine arts. While strolling through the city you can stop and enjoy a wine or mustard tasting.

Day 6 Departure

 Your cycling holiday along the Canal de Bourgogne is unfortunately over.
